August 30, 2022: SS. FELIX AND ADAUCTUS

The saints are arrived at their kingdom with palms; they have merited crowns of glory from the hand of God.

Prayer (Collect).

We humbly beseech thee, O Lord, that as thou daily fillest us with new joys, by the festivals of thy saints, so thou would’st vouchsafe us protection by their prayers. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

The holy martyrs Felix and Adauctus won their palms in the reign of Diocletian. Their tomb, which lies close to that of the Apostle of the Gentiles, is adorned by one of the beautiful epitaphs of Pope Saint Damasus.

Saint Felix, a Roman priest, was taken in the persecution of Diocletian and condemned to lose his head. As he was being led to execution he was met by a stranger, who, being a Christian, was so moved by the sight that he cried out with a loud voice, “I also confess the same law as this man. I confess the same Jesus Christ; and I am ready to lay down my life in witness of these truths.” He was at once seized, led before the magistrate, hastily sentenced, and the martyrs were both beheaded together. The real name of the stranger was never ascertained. He was therefore called Adauctus, or one who had joined himself to the martyr Felix.
